Being a a fan of Jeanette Winterson's writing on a first reading I was a little disappointed with this novella and would have given it a 4 as it seemed a little unsubstantial and lacking in focus However having given this time to settle I have to say it has grown on me If you are looking for a historical account don't buy this in the introduction Winterson states uite clearly that it is a fantasy and only loosely linked to the historical events Rather Winterson uses the setting of the Pendle witch trials to explore ideas and motifs which resonate with many of her other novels such as gender power love and time and interweave them with a distinct element of fantasySpoilerdoes contain a scene of sexual violence
