I never know about Daniel Dennett I ve read a few of his books so something drags me back He is extremely intelligent knowledgeable and experienced so of course he has something to offer But he can get a bit obscure and I freuently end up thinking Nah that was OK but I ve forgotten half of it already and I m never going to be bothered to re read it At one stage he has some really weird comments in this book about locking up people who make artificially intelligent things look like humans or like cute children or whatever as it really gets him worked up that people who aren t as bright as he is will start confusing the conscious alive with the clever and appealing but not alive and then perhaps we ll all go down this slippery slope of confusing beings and machines and giving robots rights and so on This fear and idea of punishment is such a neurotic over reaction and so violently and ridiculously against what actual human beings want things that they re comfortable with that they can talk to and don t look like a box on a stick just look at the massive popularity in Japan of humanoid cute robots that he s just too out of touch with how real people rather than a handful of superintelligent academics will naturally want to develop things And I really don t see his fears from any foundation of philosophy or consciousness as being sufficiently grounded firstly people really won t be daft enough to give legal rights to the euivalent of computerised chess champions secondly the perspective of artificial intelligence on the nature of consciousness and whether something without any meat will actually end up really conscious rather than only seeming conscious will surely be written about differently in the future and I don t mean 200 years away I mean we don t know what will be said or claimed or understood within 20 years All I know is that locking people up because they make a machine that looks or sounds or seems human really isn t a good foundation for a future society or science
