I read Arthur Wallis's book after reading Franklin Hall's 'Atomic Power with God' Both were recommended To appreciate Hall's book I think a comparison will help I'm submitting much the same review for both booksIt took Hall's book to really stir my interest in thinking about fasting It took Wallis' book to better ground the subject stripping away exaggerated expectations and ill informed assumptions about medicine that are littered throughout APwG Wallis takes a balanced if perhaps over cautious approach but then he doesn't want spiritual 'needless casualties of war' to coin a phrase Wallis doesn't mention Hall but if you have read both you can see that Wallis is aware of Hall is critical and is subtly restoring balance without ever once naming names or crediting Hall perhaps to avoid advertising his flawed booksBoth books are replete with scripture but Wallis' interpretation of scripture comes from a cooler mind Reading Hall first I was surprised to have my attention drawn to how to do lessons in Jesus' preaching How had I so overlooked it Perhaps because I'd never given the subject thought never thinking it was something for me One thing I did get from both books is that fasting doesn't earn spiritual merit but rather punches through the spiritual fog that sometimes envelopes Christians Can't hear from God Can't sense his presence any Unanswered prayer Try fasting Think of it as a 'weapon of our warfare' spiritual not physical warfare of course There are no guarantees of breakthrough and breakthrough often comes after the fasting has ended How and why No one really knows Leave that with God But if you're getting nowhere consider doing so but read Wallis first as a minimum preferably over Hall Both cover all of thisHall's approach is a extreme water only for daysweeks on end approach Enough to put people off Wallis doesn't put that on the reader Both discuss different degrees of fasting skip a meal fast a day water only or not some food or none The options are covered by both authors Hall is perfectionistic and Wallis balanced as mentioned so I recommend Wallis' advice Before any longer fast we would really need to be well informed for health reasons and in the absence of knowledge passed on by JewChristian to JewChristian in antiuity I strongly suggest it is important to read a well informed book Not least you don't want to come to grief during or after the fast when you have to think about what your body is physically capable of One thing I learned is that nothing in fasting is spiritual in itself it is simply a physical thing that some people including many non Christians do purely for health reasons from time to time Hall emphasises this If you want spiritual benefit you have to apply yourself to thatIf you read only one book read Wallis's If you read both then Hall might really ignite your enthusiasm and Wallis might just bring common sense But as mentioned Wallis may be over cautious and if you take him too literally you might never start a fast Hall stirs up enthusiasm to start Wallis brings measured wisdom before you do soBy the way an honourable mention too to Roger Forster's booklet 'Fasting' for basically focussing on scripture Bible study can't be a bad place to start if you want to consider fasting
