Winner of a Logos Arranging Our PDF #202 Book AwardDo you long for a deep fundamental change in your life with God Do you desire a greater intimacy with God Do you wonder how you might truly live your life as God created you to live it Spiritual disciplines are activities that open us to God's transforming love and the changes. I read this book after seeing so many reviews describing it on Com as excellent I feel a little guilty in having to report that I didn't get so much out of itOn the one hand this is indeed a very good review of various spiritual practices Each chapter about 30 minutes each in my reading speed which is not particularly fast takes a spiritual practice and describes it and how it might fit into a life The practices described are solitude lectio divina prayer honouring the body keeping it in reasonable shape as the temple of the Holy Spirit self examination examen discernment and sabbath rest The book borrows from various traditions but is perhaps most influence by Ignatian spirituality The final chapter describes how these practices may be ordered into an every day life So if someone is looking for a good review of these various practices this is definitely a book to be recommendedSo why can I be only lukewarm about it The first reason is that I found it to be rather a picture postcard description of the practices There's not the depth that one might find in the writings of say Ruth Burrows Perhaps that is inevitable though with each chapter being relatively short it was bound to be limited to a surface level description of these practicesThe second reason I struggled a little with this book is the emphasis on a methodical approach to spirituality While regular rhythms are common place in the spiritual life this book for me turned it too much into a mechanical process bolting on various practices for differing gains I am reminded of the advice of Ruth Burrows that it's not so much a matter of which techniue of prayer we use or how good we are at it but what is most important is that we are bringing ourselves into the presence of God into the loving and healing gaze of Christ The way this book describes techniues seemed to me to be akin to a life style guide rather than talking of deep communion with God There was much talk of the practices than of God or Jesus but again perhaps that is inevitable in a book such as this I would however have preferred it if it had had the space to go beyond further beyond the techniues and had had the space to dwell on God and Jesus Christ What seems lost in this book is the redeeming relationship between mankind and God through Jesus ChristHowever among this techniue based approach there are some beautifully chosen uotes and Ruth herself adds some little gems so I will leave on a positive note with a beautiful thought of Ruth'sI don't know about you but I yearn for the freedom and beauty of a life that is completely oriented to the reality of God I long to experience my soul hidden and content in the very depths of God so that what is seen on the surface is transformed and energized by what takes place in those depths The choice to orient our life to God's transforming presence is always ours; sacred rhythms help us to say yes to this desire day be day be day
