I wanted to like Empress in Disguise as it’s one of my favorite types of stories Unfortunately it has serious flaws including the fact that Daiyu is a whiny totally unlikable Mary Sue Yes she does a few unselfish things like choosing to sell herself so her family will be provided for But she is given opportunity after opportunity and all she does is bewail how hateful the Manchu are and how abused the Han are Even as she benefits from how the Manchu treat her that she doesn’t go through the agony that her mother did she never truly acknowledges that the Manchu have done anything positive I’m not saying she has to accept everything that the Manchu have done because they have obviously downtrodden the Han in the history of this story but she should at least acknowledge that they have done some positive things Daiyu’s position education opportunities and yes healthy feet are things that the Manchu system is providing It just feels that her racism keeps her from acknowledging anything even while she takes advantage of the systemI’m not sure of the historical accuracy of this story because a uick read of the Wikipedia and the Imperial Chinese harem system doesn’t seem to match what’s in the story That’s a bit concerning because I took this to be an historically accurate story while taking place with fictional characters I didn’t bother looking into it further because I’d already decided to ditch the bookWhy The main character is a Mary Sue to the max I dislike Mary Sue characters intensely and Daiyu is the epitome of a Mary SueShe is unbelievably beautiful but doesn’t believe it lusted after and instantly loved by the men who meet her she skips ranks in the harem with stupid ease and yes all the other women hate her Daiyu’s behavior is in no way deserving of love she seems very self centered and immature and she cheats on her husband who treats her with civility courtesy who listens to her advice etc merely on a whim because she’s met this person and thinks he’s handsome I also detest instalove but when it justifies cheating on your spouse it’s even worse She somehow seems to be picking up all the skills needed without actually taking time to be taught them or even working at them at all with the exception of whatever lessons she had at the mother’s house also majorly glossed over before entering the selection processThe world building is incredibly anemic There is so little description of the world the cities and the palace environs that you can’t even picture it in your head It’s almost like they thought saying there was a bridge or a building with divisions into four rooms was enough Oh they do mention when things are painted red so I guess that’s something I’d like descriptions not tons of extraneous adjectives to where it’s transformed into a Barbara Cartland but enough that we can picture this world and believe it is realTime passes without warning In the story time will suddenly shift and you realize that time has passed and then have to try to figure out about how much time has gone by There should be some type of transition and uantification A major relocation of the palace takes place with hundreds of people concubines staff eunuchs etc with barely any coverage This is a huge undertaking that was covered almost as just a mentionCopyediting is sadly absent Simple typos and similar word substitutions that can slip by spellcheckers such as “mush” for “much” are annoying and should have been caughtAll in all this story annoyed me so much that I gave up about three uarters through jumped to the end to see the Mary Sue aspect got worse and deleted it from my libraryI was really excited to discover this book but was left disappointed I would not recommend this book if you find Mary Sue characters or instalove annoying are looking for historical accuracy or are bothered by the type of racism portrayed
