Republic of Lies American Conspiracy Theorists and Their Surprising Rise to PowerLan reveals a world of innuendo and propaganda lying just beneath the surface of US culture It might just help explain the political turmoil of our time Through exhaustive research personal interviews and a critical yet at times appropriately empathetic approach writer Anna Merlan has written a captivating book that illuminates the landscape of conspiracy theories New York Magazine An entertaining taxonomy of toxic ideas Herald A rock steady narrator with a ready command of history nerves of steel and incisive social insights We need a thousand of her or a million The Nati. This book covered material that has the potential to be very disturbing but the sense I came away with after reading it was respect for the author She was able to see the members of these groups as human beings rather than caricatures which cannot have been easy when at least some of them were advocating for her death right in front of her She manages the difficult balancing act of listening to views that are repulsive or factually incorrect being clear about her own position on these issues and letting the individuals she interviews tell their own stories so that the readers can make their own judgment It might have been easy to turn this into a screed but she did not The narrative is engaging as though your wittiest friend is telling you about the wild weekend she had meeting the most unusual people without losing track of fact checking Highly recommended
